Great Hair All Summer Long

(ARA) - Summer activities are a great way to enjoy the long, warm days of the season. Whether you're biking, swimming or basking in the sun, summer is meant to be enjoyed outdoors. But while all that time in the sunshine and water is great for your attitude -- it can take a toll on your hair.

Just as sun and wind can affect the feel of your skin, the elements can make hair feel dry, brittle and frazzled. Make sure you face the hot months ahead with tools that will keep you looking your best.

If you spend summer days in the water, you're hair could be suffering. Whether it's chlorine or salt water, the effect can be dry, discolored and damaged hair. Wearing a swim cap is a good first line of defense. For an extra dose of protection, massage a creamy conditioner through your hair before you don the cap. The treatment will go to work while you work out and you can wash it away during your post-swim shower.

Many active women prefer a pony tail to keep hair off their neck and out of their face. But this simple approach can damage the hair if the wrong accessories are used. Look for hair elastics without metal parts that can snag on locks. And barrettes and clips should be as easy to get out as they are to put in. Otherwise, you may end up pulling out or breaking strands each time you wear them.

Summer is also the perfect time to experiment with a new hair style. If you've been eyeing a new look, but have been afraid to take the plunge, don't wait any longer. Ask your stylist for suggestions to find the right cut for your hair, face shape and lifestyle.

To protect a new look and repair the damage caused by the elements as well as styling and coloring, use gentle treatments based on your hair's unique needs. A new tandem to consider is Barrier and Reconstructor from Mane 'n Tail. Barrier is a leave-in treatment that protects hair from the damaging effects of heat-styling, helping to prevent breakage and split ends, while maintaining manageability without weighing down your style. Or if you suffer from seriously fried tresses or over-processed hair resulting from perms, bleaching, relaxers or coloring, try Reconstructor, which uses an exclusive combination of deep penetrating proteins and conditioners to repair shaft damage while normalizing the ph balance of the hair.

By following these tips, you'll enjoy your favorite activities and a new look while maintaining thicker, fuller, healthier looking hair all summer long.

Look for Mane n' Tail products at Sally Beauty Supply, Walgreen's and other retailers.
